DEFINITION OF CHARACTERISATION METHODS: Physical, Geotechnical and Chemical characterisation of Marine Sediments regarding their use for civil engineering applications - Standards & Methodologies

This report presents the common characterisation methods used in CEAMaS. It provides a wide range of characterisation techniques useful to determine sediments characteristics for reuse applications. It will allow professionals, stakeholders, or students to determine their own characterisation strategy with CEAMaS experience and give a background to understand with more detail the characterisation work undertaken in the CEAMaS project.

This report describes standards and methodologies used in CEAMaS laboratory work in order to evaluate sediment characteristics for potential reuse applications. It presents physical, geotechnical, mineralogical and chemical characterisation as well as other complementary tests, as available in 2015. No results are included.



Possible reuse of (marine) sediments in mortar and concrete and in geotechnical applications & experimental mortar tests

This report provides a detailed overview of the different requirements within European and national standards regarding the possible reuse of (marine) dredged sediments in mortar and concrete on the one hand and in several geotechnical applications, i.e. reinforced fills, road sub-bases, geotextile tubes and soil mixing, on the other hand.

A literature study has been undertaken of existing European and national standards on the possible reuse of sediments in mortar and concrete and in geotechnical applications.


Laboratory tests on mortars using one of the CEAMaS sediments as a filler showed that the CEAMaS sediment can be used as an alternative filler in mortar. However, the addition of the sediment decreased the workability of the mortar remarkably and made the addition of a superplasticizer necessary. Nevertheless, the differences between the reference mortar and the CEAMaS mortar were within the range allowed by the European standards.

Zoon on laboratory study: CEAMaS mortars have been prepared by replacing the limestone filler by CEAMaS sediment and have been tested for several characteristics (i.e. consistency, setting time, bulk density and air content of the fresh mortar and dry bulk density, flexural and compressive strength, sorption and desorption, thermal conductivity and SEM of the hardened mortar).
