CEAMaS brings together eight partners from Belgium, France, Ireland and the Netherlands in order to propose environmental, economic, social and regulatory solutions to issues of the current management and reuse of dredged sediments. The partnership expertise covers civil engineering, geosciences, coastal and maritime engineering, dredging and sediment management, geography, sustainable construction.
Cd2e – Lead Partner
Cd2e is a French environmental cluster which brings together SMEs, laboratories/universities, local authorities, eco-friendly companies to work together in order to develop new eco-technologies and environmental solutions in many environmental thematic including sediment management. Since 2005, CD2E is working with Regional council of Northern France, French Ministry of Ecology, universities and industrials in Civil engineering in order find a sustainable solution to the tons of dredged sediments by regional ports and to develop a new civil engineering industry. Cd2e is part of the national project SEDIMATERIAUX in France. The TU Delft is the largest technical university in The Netherlands, and has the highest international ranking of all Dutch universities. The department of environmental engineering provides the necessary knowledge for engineers dealing with a sustainable use and protection of the natural soils. In a broader sense it concerns all environmental issues with a relation to the shallow and deep subsurface. There is no clear boundary between soils and sediments, especially not in a region with large tidal impacted areas, seasonal flooding’s and droughts and an umbrella legislation that looks at reuse of soil and sediments within the same policy. Sustainable reuse of sediments on land or in water bodies is therefore part of our field of interest. We contribute to the CEAMaS project by fundamental research and sharing knowledge on the sediment behaviour during the drying and wetting of sediments and peat, and by setting up and sharing the results of our field validation pilot on sludge ripening.
The department of environmental engineering works in close collaboration with Deltares, a not for profit organisation for applied knowledge development and application of knowledge to enable delta life, which assists (local) governments, port authorities and dredging firms in optimizing sediment management, sediment removal and sediment reuse.

University College of Cork
The Coastal and Marine Research Centre (CMRC) is a key research centre within the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) in University College Cork (UCC) - Ireland. The CMRC has over 19 years of experience in conducting fundamental and applied coastal and marine research supported by competitively won national and international funding, and commercial contracts with government agencies and industry. The CMRC is now joined with the Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre (HMRC) and the Sustainable Energy Research Group (SERG) to form a single research entity, Beaufort Research.
Research and consultancy in the CMRC is undertaken by staff with a range of specialist backgrounds including biologists, computer scientists, hydrographers, geographers and engineers, all of whom work collaboratively in a project focussed environment. The Centre’s expertise and skill sets are highly regarded both nationally and internationally and are aligned with policy and research agendas such as the European Integrated Maritime Policy. The CMRC currently has forty dedicated research staff and post-graduate researchers and supports multidisciplinary research through five inter-linked thematic groups: Coastal and Marine Governance; Marine Ecology; Marine Geomatics; Coastal Processes and Seabed; and, Applied Remote Sensing and GIS.
The CMRC has direct experience relating to different aspects of marine management and dredging activity, including for example:
- Marine aggregates resource mapping - discovery and quantification (acquisition processing and interpretation and industry standard analysis of multi-beam sonar, boomer sub-bottom profiles, sediment samples (laser granulometry) and vibrocores).
- Sediment resource quality and availability, desktop and web-based GIS analysis maps and assessments for research and commercial purposes.
- Environmental impact assessment (seabirds, marine mammals, fisheries and benthos mapping).
- Oceanographic and coastal process monitoring – (current metering, suspended sediments.

Ecole Centrale de Lille
The research team of ECLille is working on several multidisciplinary subjects: the mechanical, thermal and hygrothermal properties of construction materials, the reuse of new materials in Civil Engineering field and particularly sediments.
Directed by Professor Zoubeir LAFHAJ, this team has considerable add-value in CEAMAS PROJECT by innovating in sediments’ reuse in construction field (leading partner for WP2).
Pr. LAFHAJ has valuable experiences in dealing with sediments’ subject. He studied, for more than ten years, both marine and river sediments from different sites. He focused also on the treatment of polluted sediments and their reuse later. Several of his research activities dealt with finding solutions for the sediments issue.
The team includes post-doctoral researchers that worked on numerous fields, mentioning: projects on the reuse of wastes in civil engineering materials, studies on the assessment of sediments quality its bioremediation.

TVES EA 4477 (i.e. Territories, Cities, Environment and Society Research Unit 4477) is currently a multidisciplinary team in the field of social sciences (geography, urban and spatial planning, economics, sociology, political science and management). This research lab numbers 50 permanent fulltime researchers, 46 Phd students and 9 administrative staff members from Lille 1 Sciences and Technologies and from Littoral-Côte d’Opale Universities.
The scientific objectives of TVES lab is grounded by the concepts of territory and the nature-society relationships in their spatial context. TVES research actions and scientific topics belong with three main research axis:
- Urban mutations and territorial development: planning, mobility, attractivness, frontiers (resp.: Michel Carrard & Maryvonne Prévot);

The Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) is a private institute founded in 1960 for the benefit of all building contractors. Its three main missions are:
- to perform scientific and technical research on construction;
- to supply technical information, assistance and consultancy;
- to contribute to innovation and development in the construction sector by performing contract research upon request of industry and authorities.
BBRI has a specialised division on sustainable construction involved in waste and resource management and recycling, a concrete division involved in concrete recycling and filler applications and a geotechnical division working on e.g. soil-mix applications.

BRGM (Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières) is the French geological survey.
Activities are organized around its 5 key roles: Scientific research, Support to public policy development, International cooperation, Mine Safety and Training, and main topic areas that address: geology, mineral resources, geothermal energy, geological storage of CO2, risks, post mining, water, polluted sites and soils, waste, metrology and laboratories, information systems.
In the field of sediments management, both marine and inland, BRGM contributes to several research programs with the following actions and expertise:
- decision support systems, involving enlarged system boundaries in order to account for external benefits of sustainable options,
- description and assessment of alternative or innovative management scenarios, including their socio-economic consequences and acceptability,
- identification of new paths for sediment reuse, their requirements and specifications,
- environmental evaluation of management options and technologies,
- characterization techniques and methods, especially on-site and rapid techniques aimed at supporting more sustainable management options such as selective dredging or treatment,
- impact monitoring of dredging operations, in relation with water quality,
- evaluation of treatment techniques and strategies in relation with sediment reuse.
